The Conference will attract about 500 participants of several countries and from all over Brazil to discuss community based tourism as a strategy to encourage popular traditional culture, environmental protection, local development and fair trade in tourism.
The event is the continuation of the process to develop a new model of tourism initiated in 2003 (1st Conference). The conference will be an occasion for exchange and dialogue of members of communities, organizations (NGO, social movements, tour organizers, fair trade tour operators, conservation organizations) and governmental agencies from Brazil and other countries in Latin America and Europe.
The Conference is composed of panels, selforganized sessions to promote networking, cine club, oral and poster presentations with cultural events, handicraft and tourism fairs.
The program aims to contribute to the construction of a model of tourism that breaks the dominant logic of conventional tourism and builds another perspective to improve the quality of live of host communities, and the relationship with visitors, society, culture and nature for a model of fair trade and sustainability.
The organizers of the event intend to widen the debate about sustainability of tourism to include other perspectives of sustainable tourism like ecotourism in protected areas, rural tourism, tourism as a strategy for the protection of endangered species, always based on the fair trade concept and respect for local communities.
